Michiko Okubo, Two Cushions, Oil on canvas, 2018, 50 x 65.2cm.

HONG KONG.- Tiancheng International is presenting “Spectrum of Life ── A Selling Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Art”, from 28 November to 1 December, concurrently with the Preview of the Jewellery and Jadeite Autumn Auction. The exhibition will showcase 20 masterpieces by Japanese contemporary artists, including Michiko Okubo and Takafumi Ohba. Works featured in the exhibition are available for immediate purchase.

Wang Jie, Managing Director of Tiancheng International, remarks, “Following the success of the Japanese contemporary art selling exhibition held during our spring auction earlier this year, Tiancheng International continues to bring to collectors simple yet heart-warming works of Japanese contemporary art. With a focus on Japanese artists from the younger generation, this exhibition explores their aspirations for the future through a unique pictorial language depicting their understanding of the present era. Bringing into play an array of materials that stems from artists’ scrupulous observation of the environments in which they live; viewers are presented with a broad spectrum of life that are refreshing and thought-provoking.”

HIGHLIGHTS
Michiko Okubo, Two Cushions. Oil on canvas, 2018. 50 x 65.2cm

Born in Gunma Prefecture of Japan in 1989, Michiko Okubo graduated from Tama Art University in 2016 and has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo and Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture. Recently, her creations centre on the work and lifestyle of the younger generation, as well as subtle variations of people’s expressions and mannerisms. To be showcased in the upcoming exhibition is her Two Cushions, which was selected as part of the Mitsubishi Corporation Art Gate Program in 2018. Employing light-toned, pastel colours and deft, unrestrained brushstrokes, together with a bold composition, Okubo expresses what she sees and how she feels in an unpretentious manner.

Takafumi Ohba, River on the North. Pigment, silver leaf and gold leaf on Japanese paper, 2018. 72.7 x 72.7cm
Takafumi Ohba was born in Osaka, Japan in 1988. Having graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of Hiroshima City University in 2013, he completed a PhD in the same department in 2018. His works have won him multiple awards at various exhibitions, such as the Spring Exhibition 2018 of the Tokyo Soga-kai Association of Japanese Painting, and the Exhibition for the Young Artist Exchange and Development – “Fine Art / University Selection 2016-2017”. It is difficult not to be stunned by the audacious expressiveness of the sizeable colour blocks in Ohba’s works. The colour may seem unmodulated, it is in fact steeped in the artist’s immense emotions, conveying and juxtaposing tranquillity and ecstasy in the artpiece. Ohba is particularly skilled at creating idiosyncratic works with a variety of media. Complementing mineral pigments with silver and gold leaves, the textured work depicts the rhythm of the flowing streams.
