SEOUL.- Gallery Hyundai is presenting Nothing, But, a solo exhibition of artist Myoung Ho Lee who has earned international acclaim for his poetic yet philosophical photographs. This is Lee’s second solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai, and showcases thirty diverse pieces including works from his key series Tree and Mirage.

A central part of the show is new series Nothing, But (2018), which lends its name to the exhibition’s title, depicting a canvas standing alone in the landscape. Having relinquished the function of revealing or creating something, the canvas encompasses everything precisely because it does not offer anything specific. This gesture infinitely expands Lee’s creative world of approaching traces of being and the essence of existence, as the artist aims to discuss what lies beyond the visible.

All the works in the show exist within Lee’s wider Art-Act Project, which he began in 2004. This project explores reality by installing a canvas behind a tree, or creating an unreality by placing it in the middle of a desert. This exhibition, composed of works exploring reality and unreality, the in-between and spaces beyond, will provide a site for reexamining the concept of “experience” as fundamental to diverse perspectives and identity.

Myoung Ho Lee (b. 1975) lives and works in Seoul, and earned a B.F.A and M.F.A in photography at Chung-Ang University. He has had solo exhibitions in Korea and internationally including Yossi Milo Gallery, New York, USA, 2017 & 2009, Savina Museum, Seoul, South Korea, 2017, and Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul, South Korea, 2013, amongst others. His works are housed at major institutions worldwide including: the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, renowned for its historical photography collection; The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, USA; Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, The Netherlands; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia; Museo Arte Contemporáneo, Salta, Argentina; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, South Korea; and Seoul Museum of Art, South Korea. Lee pursues various projects with a deep interest in the utilization of and participation in art, such as the Player Project celebrating the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and public campaign Awakening the Senses organized by the Korean Teachers’ Credit Union.
