AMSTERDAM.- Galerie Ron Mandos announced that the gallery will start representing artist Esther Tielemans. The gallery team looks forward to an inspiring collaboration. Galerie Ron Mandos will show Tielemans work for the first time at Art Rotterdam, which is set to take place early February at the Van Nelle Fabriek.
Esther Tielemans (NL, 1976) is an acclaimed artist and a well-known name in the Dutch contemporary art scene. After a residency at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten she was awarded prestigious prizes, including the Royal Award for Modern Painting, the Prix de Rome and the Wolvecamp Prize. She had solo exhibitions at museums such as the Van Abbemuseum and was included in group shows at institutions including GEM Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Museum Voorlinden, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Fries Museum and De Appel.
Tielemans regards herself as a painter, albeit one who actively engages with the boundaries of the medium. From a deep interest in landscape painting, she set out on a path of experimentation which resulted in her well-known panels in seducing colours. Using pedestals, frameworks and freestanding panels, Tielemans tests the borders between painting, sculpture and installation. Shiny layers of epoxy reflect the surroundings and the viewers of the works, while drops of dried up paint at the edges of the panels emphasize their status as paintings.
Tielemans body of work is full of oppositions: between the flat surface and three-dimensionality, between abstraction and figuration, and between reality and artificial illusion. During Art Rotterdam, Galerie Ron Mandos will show Tielemans latest works, including panels with rectangular cut-outs: an image within an image, in which the experience and the memory of landscapes plays a central role. The works are not about representation, but about the sensation that landscapes can evoke.
Esther Tielemans is based in Amsterdam, but will move to New York early 2019 for a residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP). Her work is currently on view at the exhibitions Out of Office, Kunstschatten uit bedrijven at Singer Laren and Stages of Being at Museum Voorlinden. In the summer of 2019 Museum Kranenburgh will stage a solo exhibition with recent works. The book The past inside the present. Esther Tielemans was recently published by Onomatopee Projects.
