Weaving is talking is the statement that underlines Sebastien Courtys entire practice. For this exhibition, Courty does the talking through his intricately woven wall-pieces, which he calls totems and that each represent a country. The artist presents twelve individual hand-woven, wall-mounted textile installations represented as totems, embodying different countries with their natural and manufactured resources. The twelve countries included in the exhibition are United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Palestine, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, South Africa, India, and Afghanistan.
Through the distribution of the threads used in the delicate and incredibly detailed pieces, Courty has chosen to visually reflect that nations exported materials. The artist selects countries based on the materials they export most, as an opportunity to draft a singular identity through natural resources and commercial success. Each weaving is framed in an elegant wooden box enabling the visitor to dive in each countrys culture and gain a fresh perspective about international social and economic landscapes in the 12 selected nations. Not limited to fibres, Courtys work encompasses any material that will allow hand woven methods such as crystals, beads and other precious metals.
Through this innovative series, the artist aspires to move the viewers by creating an emotion through his design techniques as well as a reaction to the information presented. Combining data, textile and design as well as diverse techniques and mediums, this series uses weaving as a language and Courty creates new and challenging textures to impart his message.
Born in 1991 in Limoges, France, the artist has exhibited his textile installations around the world. His works can be found in private and corporate collections worldwide. The artist has been based in New York, USA since 2012.
