Paul Evans, Forged Front Console, USA, 1970, Estimate $100,000-120,000.

NEW YORK, NY.- In an exclusive partnership with Bidsquare, Todd Merrill Studio presents a sale of iconic mid-20th century design from some of the period's most celebrated artists, makers, and designers featured in the recently published 10th Anniversary Edition of Modern Americana: Studio From High Craft to High Glam.

This unprecedented sale features exceptional pieces from celebrated designers Wendell Castle, Stephen Chase, John Dickinson, Frances Elkins, Paul Evans, William "Billy" Haines, Vladimir Kagan, Larry Laslo, Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, Harvey Probber, Ron Seff, and Karl Springer.

Internationally recognized Paul Evans is featured the most in this sale, with cabinets, tables, lighting and more by Evans. One unique piece is a Forged Front Console.

For the past decade, Merrill's book, Modern Americana has been celebrated by designers, collectors, curators, and journalists and has been used in educational institutions as scholarly material. The first edition quickly sold out from some of the finest museum stores in the world and eventually was selling for up to ten times its original price. Rizzoli responded by encouraging Merrill to bring together his unique mix of market experts and writers to revisit the entire book and not only update it, but to also add two new chapters.

For this tenth-anniversary expanded edition, 20th Century dealer Todd Merrill has added 60 pages to his original book, the first ever authoritative examination of the great studio furniture makers and designers who, from 1940 through the 1990s defined American high style. The survey of the period continues with two massive additional chapters focused on women makers and showrooms. During the intervening decade since the first edition, 20th Century American design by the makers featured in Modern Americana has become one of the most collectible periods of historic design with prices exceeding six figures for works by these designers. The lavishly illustrated edition comes with 60 new pages infused with an incredible array of new photography, including record setting iconic pieces from auction houses around the world.

"We are delighted to partner with Todd Merrill on this sale to celebrate the launch of the tenth-anniversary edition of Modern Americana," said Allis Ghim, President and CEO of Bidsquare. "With Modern Americana celebrating designers regularly highlighted on Bidsquare, in addition to its highlighting of record setting iconic pieces sold by auction houses, this sale was a perfect fit.

According to Merrill, Modern Americana doesn’t define a style or a singular moment in time as much as it identifies an attitude or an approach. Both this sale and the book showcase designers and craftsmen of unique individual visions who maintained aesthetic control over the creative process from start to finish, whether an item was hewn by hand or executed by a small staff, or even produced in a small factory.

Merrill sees these modern American designers such as Paul Evans, Wendell Castle, and George Nakashima, on a continuum with the country’s important early custom cabinet-makers like the Townsend-Goddard family and Duncan Phyfe.

Bidding is now live for Todd Merrill Studio's sale on Bidsquare, Modern Americana - Iconic American Studio Furniture from the Post War Period. Bidding closes Friday, January 18th at 8PM EST.
