BOSTON, MASS.- Harry Dodge: Works of Love features a selection of recent sculptures, drawings, and videos by the Los Angeles-based artist. Dodge’s sculptural assemblages are riotous, precarious constructions that revel as much in theoretical ideas about a posthuman future as they do in the ecstasy of the workaday present. In Dodge’s most recent series of tabletop sculptures called “Works of Love,” aluminum pipes and industrial fittings adjoin to look like alien prosthetics or robot appendages. Inspired by concepts like French poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant’s notion of “consenting not to be a single being,” Dodge’s creations are simultaneously ascendant and broken—objects that suggest unwieldiness: states fluctuating between the analog and digital, alien and earthly, material and virtual, me and you.

The exhibition will also present work from Dodge’s series of human-scale, anthropomorphic sculptures grouped together in his 2015 exhibition The Cybernetic Fold . Coated in shiny resin, the sculptures bend finish fetish minimalism toward comedic ends with drooping tube-sock phalluses to meditate, as the New York Times described, “seriously, and deliriously, on the fluid nature of identity and how technology alters bodies and consciousness.” Dodge, a 2017 Guggenheim fellow, reads voraciously and, like his layered, assemblage sculptures, his videos are dense and humorous discussions that range from diatribes on quantum physics to ergonomic desk furniture and machine learning. Harry Dodge: Works of Love will present an opportunity to see Dodge’s ideas pulse through his sculptures, videos, and drawings that joyfully embrace an aesthetic of ecstatic contamination.

Harry Dodge (b. 1966 San Francisco, CA) holds an MFA from Milton Avery School of the Arts at Bard College and is permanent faculty of the School of Art at California Institute of the Arts, Program in Art. His work has been featured in Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon at the New Museum, New York (2018); Selections from the Permanent Collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2017); the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2008), and Made in LA at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2014). Harry Dodge: Works of Love at Tufts University Art Galleries will be accompanied by a brochure featuring a new text by Fred Moten and an interview with Dodge and Dina Deitsch, Tufts University Art Galleries Director and Chief Curator. Harry Dodge: Works of Love was first presented in part at JOAN, Los Angeles in 2018.
