DETROIT, MICH.- The Detroit Institute of Arts has hired Dorota Chudzicka as assistant curator of modern European art in The James Pearson Duffy Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Chudzicka has held research and curatorial positions at the Qatar Museums, the Freer|Sackler Galleries, and the Art Institute of Chicago. A specialist in 19th and 20th century European art, she has published on sculptor Stanislaw Szukalski as well as the history of collecting and the 20th century art market. At the DIA, she will be researching the DIA's collection of modern European art and contributing to modern European exhibitions and gallery installations.

Sidlik Curator of European Art, 1850-1970. “She brings with her an exceptionally strong record of research and scholarship, and we look forward to her work with our esteemed collection of modern European art and our visitor-centered presentations of it.”

From 2013-2017, Chudzicka was a curator at the Qatar Museums working on an international exhibition devoted to the subject of collecting and Orientalism as well as researching and documenting the museum’s collection.

From 2008 to 2013 and in 2018, she was part of a research team of the Smithsonian Institution World War II Provenance Project as a Provenance Research Associate at the Freer|Sackler Galleries in Washington D.C. While at the F|S, she contributed to developing new methods and standards of provenance research, conducted research on the collection, and published on the subject of the history of collecting and the 20th century art market.

Prior to moving to Washington, Chudzicka worked for over five years in the Art Institute of Chicago’s Department of Medieval through Modern European Painting and Sculpture where she primarily focused on the 19th century collection. She contributed to research projects and exhibitions, including Manet and the Sea (2003), Seurat and the Making of La Grande Jatte (2004), and Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde (2006-2007).

Dorota earned her art history degree at the Warsaw University Department of History (M.A. 2002, Ph.D. 2013) after completing her medical studies at the Warsaw School of Medicine (M.D. 1999). Her doctoral thesis examined the art of Stanislaw Szukalski (1893-1987) in the context of modernist movements in Chicago in the beginning decades of the 20th century. It was published by the Institute of World Art Studies, Warsaw in 2015.
