BROOKLYN, NY.- Janet Borden, Inc. announces a new exhibition of vintage Kitchen Still Lifes by Jan Groover. Jan Groover created her famous Kitchen Still Lifes in 1978 and 1979. Using a large-format camera, she transformed colanders, knives, spatulas and baking pans into objects of beauty that still hold a visual interest that transcends their common use. Her seductively modern color palette of greens, pewter, bronze and brown tonalities permeates the space dissected by kitchen paraphernalia. These take on a new visual meaning as a result of Groover’s juxtaposition of the elements. Although never unrecognizable as everyday objects, these utensils float into an abstract amalgam of planes and shapes.

This famous series of 16 x 20 inch color photographs have integrity and an elegance that is as fresh as it was when it was first shown in the 1970s. At that time, they were considered “big pictures.” Thy are still the backbone of her formalist approach to photography where the mundane turns magical.

All prints are chromogenic color prints. They are from the edition of three.

Jan Groover (1943 – 2011) was a major figure in contemporary photography. Her work is included in virtually all major museum collections and was exhibited worldwide. Monographs on Groover have been published by the Neuberger Museum; The Museum of Modern Art; New York Graphic Society; Lausanne Museum; and others, which are widely available. She has had solo exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, and many more. Her archives are stored at the Musée d'Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland, and will be exhibited in September 2019 in a major retrospective.
