Bowdoin College Museum of Art appoints Curatorial Assistant and Manager of Student Programs
Elizabeth Humphrey’s two-year appointment begins in July 2019.

BRUNSWICK, ME.- The Bowdoin College Museum of Art announces the appointment of Elizabeth Humphrey as the next Curatorial Assistant/Manager of Student Programs. Humphrey will receive her Master’s degree in American Material Culture this spring from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware and is a 2014 graduate of Bowdoin College. Humphrey interned at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in 2014. She researched unidentified sitters in NMAAHC’s photographic collection, including the work of H.C. Anderson’s Greenville, MS series featured in the inaugural exhibition, Power of Place . As a Lois F. McNeil Fellow in the Winterthur Program of American Material Culture, Humphrey researched diverse narratives found in American material and visual culture, architecture, and design. Her master’s thesis, Moorish in the Midwest, considers the role and influence of the Alhambra and global design on nineteenth-century American architecture.

As the Curatorial Assistant, Elizabeth Humphrey will assist with curatorial programs, exhibitions, and research; train and supervise student employees and tour guides; schedule group tours of the Museum; and work with the development of digital resources.

“I am excited to return to the Museum and work with the collection, and look forward to liaising between the students and the Museum and mentoring those interested in the arts and humanities,” said Humphrey.

“We are so pleased to welcome Elizabeth Humphrey back to the Bowdoin community,” said Co-Director Frank H. Goodyear III. “She worked at the Museum as an undergraduate at Bowdoin and her subsequent museum experience and graduate studies will make her a valuable member of the curatorial team.”

Co-director Anne Collins Goodyear added, “As an academic museum devoted to teaching and research, the BCMA is thrilled to welcome Elizabeth to help facilitate outreach to students on campus and beyond. She is a first-rate scholar who will add much to the Bowdoin community.”

Elizabeth Humphrey’s two-year appointment begins in July 2019.
