Theodore Robinson. Pyramus & Thisbe or The First Kiss.

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.- The Baltimore Museum of Art presents In Monet's Light: Theodore Robinson at Giverny, through January 9, 2005. Giverny — the charming pastoral village in France where Monet lived and worked — attracted many American artists in the late 1880s, but Theodore Robinson was one of the few to have direct contact with the master of French Impressionism. This is the first major exhibition to present the glorious paintings Robinson created during the course of his six extended visits to Giverny between 1887 and 1892. Drawn from the nation’s leading museums and private collections, these works include breathtaking views of Giverny in every season, charming portraits of local villagers set amongst picturesque architecture, and a series of panoramas of the Seine River valley that reflects the changing light of the day.
This special ticketed exhibition also features examples from Monet’s series of haystacks and the Rouen cathedral, as well as archival photographs of the specific locales and people that Robinson painted. An Acoustiguide Audio Tour offers rare insights into the friendship between Robinson and Monet in their own words, taken from diaries and letters published in the exhibition catalogue.
Theodore Robinson and the BMA’s Cone Collection - The art of Theodore Robinson holds a special place in the history of The Baltimore Museum of Art. In 1898, Etta Cone was given $300 to buy artwork for her parent’s house. She acquired five of Robinson’s paintings from the artist’s estate sale in New York. These were the first works in the renowned Cone Collection—and the first Impressionist paintings to be seen in Baltimore. The Cone Collection, bequeathed to the BMA in 1950, has grown to encompass 3,000 objects, including a group of 500 works by Matisse, considered the most comprehensive collection in the world, as well as major examples by Picasso, Cézanne, Gauguin, van Gogh, and Renoir.
