Christies New York presents the various owner Design auction, taking place on the morning of Tuesday, June 4. The sale features a curated selection of over 90 works ranging from the turn of the 20th century to contemporary design and features designers from Rietveld to Lalique, Vautrin, Giacometti and Newson. The top lot of the season is the majestic and imposing Mouflon de Pauline Bar Cabinet, 2007 by François-Xavier Lalanne. This piece is a highlight from The Collection of Sheila W. and Richard J. Schwartz and is estimated at $1-1.5 million. Highlights will be on view during 20th Century Week from May 4-16 and the full auction view will open on May 31st at Christies Rockefeller Center Galleries in New York.
This seasons Design auction is led by Les Lalanne: from The Collection of Sheila W. and Richard J. Schwartz, a grouping that encapsulates the nearly 60-year career of the late Claude (1925-2019) and François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008). In addition to the Mouflon de Pauline Bar Cabinet, other pieces include a 'Les Grandes Berces' Bench, 2009 by Claude Lalanne (estimate: $400,000-600,000), a group of three François-Xavier Lalanne sheep 'Transhumant', 'Bélier' and 'Agneau' from the 'Nouveaux Moutons' series, 2002-2006 (estimate: $400,000-600,000) and two 'Singe Allumé' Monkey-Form Table Lamps, designed in 2002 by François-Xavier Lalanne (estimate: $150,000-200,000 each). Other highlights include iconic works by important designers particularly Shiro Kuramatas 'Miss Blanche' Chair, designed in 1988 which was inspired by Vivien Leighs portrayal of Blanche DuBois in the 1951 film classic A Streetcar Named Desire (estimate: $250,000-350,000); a Eugène Printz & Jean Dunand Cabinet from Eugène Printzs personal collection (estimate: $300,000-500,000); and a Unique Extending Dining Table and Set of Eight Apollo Chairs, created in 1980 by the famed American craftsman Wendell Castle (estimate: $250,000-350,000). Rounding out the sale are unique pieces by René Lalique, exceptional sculptures by Harry Bertoia featuring a monumental Dandelion, circa 1970 ($120,000-180,000) from The Estate of Mary and Bruce Goodman and a curated selection of pieces by Tiffany Studios including a Lily Pad Table Lamp, circa 1905 (estimate: $100,000-150,000) and a 'Dragonfly' Table Lamp, circa 1903 (estimate: $100,000150,000).
