Three Little Pigskins Draft
Howards handwritten draft for the 1934 short film ''Three Little Pigskins'' was the fourth Three Stooges film released by Columbia Pictures. Howard wrote the two-page draft on two separate sheets of Columbia Pictures Corporation letterhead, providing the genesis of the comedy parodying the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame by the Stooges as the ''The Three Horsemen.'' The film co-starred Lucille Ball early in her career. Bidding begins at $7,800.
Also being offered are Howards draft scripts for a variety of Three Stooges films including Three Little Pigskins, The Tooth, and Monkey Businessmen.
Movie Posters
Howards personally owned movie poster for the beloved Three Stooges film Uncivil Warriors is going under the hammer. Bidding for the 1935 one-sheet poster begins at $30,000. Other posters in the auction include original advertisement sheets for the Three Stooges 1939 tour in England.
Passport and Name-Change Application
Howards United States passport was issued on May 11, 1939. He used the passport when the Three Stooges toured the United Kingdom in May and June of 1939. The passport is signed six times using both his legal name Moses Hurovitz and Moe Howard. The passport lists his address as 450 N. Highland Avenue, which is near the Wilshire Country Club. Howards emergency contact is listed as Mrs. Moe Howard.
Howards passports from 1955 and 1964 are also being offered at the auction.
Also available in the Moe Howard collection is his 1945 application to change his legal name from Moses Horwitz to Moe Howard. The petition also requests name changes for Howards wife and children.
Four Stooges Signed Contract
One of the most unique items being offered is a 1946 Columbia Pictures agreement signed after Curly suffered a stroke and was unable to perform. The contract allowed Shemp Howard to step in for Curly as one of the Three Stooges. Shemp was Moe and Curlys brother. Shemp eventually took over Curlys role on the Three Stooges as Curly was unable to recover from his stroke and passed away in 1952.
Other contracts being offered include The Three Stooges 1943 signed agreement with their manager Harry Romm and Moes personal contracts dating from 1950 to an appearance on the Mike Douglas show in 1973.
There are over 60 lots featuring handwritten manuscript drafts of Howards autobiography including timelines, notes and anecdotes. Howard spent the final years of his life compiling his memoir but died from lung cancer before it could be completed. Howards daughter Joan Howard Maurer completed her fathers work and released the autobiography in 1977.
