NEW YORK, NY.- Almine Rech will inaugurate its new Shanghai gallery with a group show opening July 12, 2019, featuring a selection of artists from the gallerys roster. The presentation coincides with a special exhibition opening July 20, 2019 at the Song Art Museum (Beijing), titled Abstraction(s). Presented in partnership with Almine Rech and curated by Nicolas Trembley, Abstraction(s) will bring together 13 artists from different generations, each who embrace and renew the heritage of abstraction, thus evidencing its vivaciousness, diversity and relevance. The show will comprise works by artists working with the gallery, including: John M Armleder, Jean-Baptiste Bernadet, Ha Chong-Hyun, Sylvie Fleury, Günther Förg, Mark Hagen, Alex Israel, Xu Qu, Anselm Reyle, Turi Simeti, Vivian Springford, Kim Tschang-Yeul, and James Turrell.
In September 2019, the gallery will open its second exhibition, a solo show of works by Genieve Figgis (b. 1972, Ireland), on view from September 20 October 19, 2019. The exhibition will include twenty new paintings, including portraits, landscapes, and domestic scenes, many characterized by the dreamlike, often haunting aesthetic that has become the artists signature.
Almine Rech Shanghai will be located at 27 Huqiu Road, opposite the acclaimed Rockbund Art Museum in the heart of Shanghais Bund district. The gallery will occupy approximately 4000 square feet of space on the second floor of the historic, three-story brick building known as the Amber Building a former warehouse originally occupied by the Central Bank of China and will also include a showroom. The Shanghai gallery marks the fifth international outpost for Almine Rech which already has spaces in Paris, London, Brussels, and New York and will be led by the gallerys directors Candice Gu and Damien Zhang.
Said Almine Rech-Picasso, We are thrilled to establish a year-round presence in Shanghai, which is rapidly becoming one of the next great hubs of the art world. The decision to expand to Asia was a natural one for us, as weve long been interested in the Asian market and engaged with collectors in the region through our participation in art fairs, as well as institutional outreach, collaboration, and regular visits to the region. With the opening of our new gallery space, we look forward to deepening our engagement with the region in ways only a physical, year-round presence could allow.
Said Gu and Zhang, The city of Shanghai with its dynamic energy and growing cultural scene has been a continued source of inspiration to us, and we are delighted to have secured such a beautiful space in the historic Amber Building. Our Shanghai outpost will allow us to extend the gallerys high-caliber programming to reach new audiences and collectors, and showcase our roster of international artists in an exciting new context, beginning with a group show of gallery artists presented on the occasion of our collaboration with the Song Art Museum.
Expanding into Shanghai will deepen Almine Rechs longstanding engagement with the Asian market, and allow the gallery to further expand its strong network of collectors, friends, and partners in China.
For the first time this year, Almine Rech exhibited at Art Busan in Busan, Korea (May 31 June 2, 2019) and will debut at ART021 in Shanghai this fall (November 7 10, 2019). Almine Rech has participated in Art Basel in Hong Kong since the fairs inaugural year and previously in Art Hong Kong between 2010 and 2012 and in Shanghais West Bund Art & Design since 2017.
Once operational in July 2019, Almine Rech Shanghai will also invite local audiences to visit the space and view a showroom presentation of Jeff Koons editions.
