LOS ANGELES, CA.- Bonhams announces the sale of Traditional/Individual: Modern Native American Art including Selections from the L.D. "Brink" Brinkman Collection on September 16. This new sale, which will offer 78 lots, features works by artists of Native American descent working in a variety of media. Highlighting the sale is Screaming Indian, a painting by Fritz Scholder, 1970 (estimate: $40,000-60,000).

The basis of Scholder's 1970s Indian series is completely original in the sense that he has discarded the stereotypical stoic Indian portraiture that had dominated Western painting until that time. Influenced by Francis Bacon’s famous series of screaming popes, Screaming Indian also showcases the subject's contorted appearance. Acquired directly by the artist, the painting was purchased during a visit to Scholder's studio in Taos in 1970 and has hung in the family home ever since.

Ingmars Lindbergs, Bonhams Director of Native American Art, comments: “We are excited to present this new sale which features themes, motifs and forms that will feel familiar to those well-versed with traditional Native American art, while also challenging staid ideas of what ‘Native American Art’ is and is not.”

Additional highlights of the sale include a “Fetish Necklace” by Denise Wallace, 1992, a transformative and detachable necklace inspired by 19th century Inuit carved fetishes of human figures ($40,000-60,000) and “Waiting for the Bus, Anadarko Princess” by T.C. Cannon, his first-ever lithograph in partnership with the prestigious Tamarind Institute (estimate: $4,000-6,000). Bonhams also presents a superb selection of 14 sculptures by Allan Houser from the L.D. “Brink” Brinkman Collection. Highlights include “War Pony” modeled 1978, bronze (estimate: $20,000-40,000); “Hunter’s Prayer” 1980, bronze (estimate: $10,000-15,000); and "I Brush My Hair," 1980, carved marble (estimate: $10,000-15,000).
