LONDON.- The Design Museum has announced a new London Design Festival installation, a Bauhaus road crossing created by award-winning graphic designer and new Pentagram partner Sascha Lobe celebrating the women of Bauhaus.
To mark the centenary of the Bauhaus, the Design Museum has commissioned Pentagram partner Sascha Lobe to design a pedestrian crossing for London Design Festival 2019. The road installation, titled Bauhaus Rewritten pays homage to the women of the Bauhaus, whose achievements are all too often overlooked in design history. The names of pioneering designers including Anni Albers, Gertrud Arndt, Marianne Brandt and Ise Gropius, will feature in a typographic layout among glyphs that Lobe and his team created while designing the new identity for the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin last year.
The crossing will be situated on High Street Kensington at the junction with Abingdon Road, moments from the Design Museum and will launch to coincide with the start of London Design Festival. The crossing is one of a series of Creative Crossings on Kensington High Street that also includes Japan House. Creative Crossings is project with the Kensington High Street Business Forum and is supported by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Sound in Mind: Yuri Suzuki
Friday 6 September 2019 – January 2020, Museum-wide
Sound artist and former Designer in Residence, Yuri Suzuki explores how we navigate and connect to the surrounding world through sound, and how new technologies can be made more relatable through novel implementations of sound design.
This free interactive sound display takes place on the first floor of the museum’s atrium and connects the space by listening tubes. The distinct sections allow members of the public to listen to conversations and spaces between the floors. Garden of Russolo, an installation consisting of sound absorbing boxes will also be on display, allowing visitors to create a sonic experience using their own voice.
Yuri Suzuki said: “I am delighted to present "Sound in Mind", which focuses on my practice as a sound artist to date, and how sound can be used as a powerful mode of communication. It is great see the Museum’s development since I was 'Designer in Residence' in 2012, and to display the Tube Map Radio, which I created during this period.”
Reflections: The Anatomy of Form

Showing for the first time in London, this exhibit explores the work of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), an interdisciplinary practice responsible for some of the world’s most technically and environmentally advanced buildings.
A series of models offers an insight into how SOM's architects and engineers practise a poetry of enquiry, experimentation and ingenuity. The exhibit showcases a selection of SOM’s ground-breaking projects, all of which anticipated new ways of living, working and learning. The display includes projects of different types and scales, including Exchange House and Manhattan Loft Gardens in London, JTI headquarters in Geneva, John Hancock Centre (875 North Michigan Avenue) and the Sears Tower (now known as the Willis Tower) in Chicago, as well as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
Working at every scale - from regional planning to the design of a single piece of furniture - allows SOM's to respond to the way we live, work and communicate and have an impact on communities around the world. The exhibit is a taster of SOM’s forthcoming exhibition The Anatomy of Structure: Art + Engineering + Architecture, at the Ambika Gallery.

Now in its twelfth year, Beazley Designs of the Year is the Design Museum's annual celebration of the most innovative and impactful products, concepts and designers in the world today. This year’s shortlist will be announced on 10 September 2019. A high-profile jury chooses a winner for each category and an overall winner – to be announced on 21 November 2019.
PriestmanGoode presents Get Onboard: Reduce. Reuse. Rethink

Design studio PriestmanGoode explores the issue of waste in travel. Each year, an estimated 5.7 million tonnes of cabin waste is generated on passenger flights, from single-use plastic to meal trays and earphones. PriestmanGoode looks at how developments in eco materials, initiatives from suppliers and changes in consumer behaviour could transform our experience across all transport modes and lead us to a more sustainable industry.
Jaguar presents The Future Legacy

Jaguar explores the British influences in its design process by showcasing individual elements taken from its cars. The display will focus on four specially designed components inspired by Britain’s rich creative identity, both past and present. These items will be displayed to highlight Jaguar’s ability to unite traditional and contemporary design. From music icons to youth sub-culture, discover the thought and cultural references applied to every aspect of Jaguar’s refined design process.
Architectural Radicals
Saturday 14 - Sunday 22 September 2019, Level 2
In the centenary year of the Bauhaus, this exhibition by the MA Curating Contemporary Design examines the role of the Architectural Association (AA) in breaking with the modernist tradition and redefining architectural practice and education. Focusing on the period between the late 1960s and early 1980s, this transformative moment for the AA is understood as an experimental and creative response to political volatility, environmental concern and the influence of new technologies – themes echoed in our present day.
Cosmic Capsule

The Designers in Residence present an immersive cosmic capsule that invites you to delve into the connections of the cosmos. This unique film installation and soundscape will take visitors on a journey through the stars to explore the miracle of childbirth, the possibilities of our food systems, the creation of wonder materials and the otherworldly landscape of Chile’s Atacama Desert.
