Fernando Botero: Works on Paper: Woman Falling from Balcony, 1994, pastel on paper, 40-1/8 x 28

ROSLYN HARBOR, N.Y.- The Nassau County Museum of Art presents Fernando Botero: A One-Man Show, through February 13. This original exhibition curated for NCMA by Constance Schwartz and Franklin Hill Perrell marks the first time anywhere in the world that Botero's personal collection of his own works--more than 70 pieces--is on exhibition. The most famed of living Latin artists, Botero was born in Columbia and has resided most recently in New York and Paris. He achieved renown beginning in the 1960's for his figural portrayals that explore the human condition in a unique style that is said to be derived from the artist's study of Renaissance masters and which feature a special sense of roundness to the body that affords an array of philosophical and aesthetic implications. The exhibition is sponsored in part by Astoria Federal Savings.
Also on display, as a separate exhibition, will be an extensive array of Latin art from the museum's own permanent collection. This recent generous gift to the museum includes the important 20th-century Surrealist masters Lam and Matta and also encompasses the work of contemporary trendsetters Colunga, Azaceta, Varajao, among many others.
