The Benefits of Television & How it Can Help Children Learn

According to a University of Michigan health study, children spend almost four hours a day in front of the TV. For children, going outside and watching TV are the two things they do for fun. When I was a kid, my family only had one television and the whole family would gather in the lounge and watch TV together. As I grew up, there were fewer rules about what we should and shouldn’t watch. Although, my parents would always say that spending too much time in front of the TV would cause health problems and make us dumb. But, this way of thinking is wrong, it is actually opposite and researchers have proven it.

Reinforce the traditional values among children:
The best thing about TV is that it enforces the traditional values among children. Children pick things up from their surroundings and apply them to their daily activities. TV shows and movies can highlight traditional values and teach us right and wrong in a particular situation. So, in this instance it can be beneficial to expose your child to TV because it could improve their understanding.

Expose the children to different cultures & roaming world virtually:
TV allows us to explore a vast world. We get to see places and things that we didn’t even know actually existed. We learn about the traditions and values of different cultures, as well as the people of that particular place. It is like you are virtually roaming the world. With the right television stations and reliable cable TV connection, you can expose your child to a river of knowledge. Knowledge just doesn’t lie in the pages of science and math books, general knowledge is also important to the growth of children. Can you think of any better way, other than to visit these places, to introduce your child to foreign culture, values, history, games, conflicts, and events? No, I also think so.

Television can improve your reading skills:
Yes, you read that right, TV can improve your reading skills. Reports have shown that children of Finland scored higher in reading than children from most other parts of the world. The reason is that they watch imported American shows and read the subtitles which not only improves their reading skills but also their reading speed.

Improved understanding of a foreign language:
Television can work wonders when trying to improve your understanding of foreign languages. Children often pick things up faster and are sharper when it comes to learning new things. So, it stands to reason that watching foreign shows can increase the probability of their learning a particular foreign language.

There are more positive effects that television has on children than we realize. Mediacom Cable can help you improve your child’s knowledge through television. But, we as adults and educators should teach our children to think critically about these mediums and encourage them to watch healthy shows that could help them increase their knowledge and understanding.
