ASNAF, YEMEN.- A picture shows Al-Abbas Mosque, located near Asnaf, 40 kms from Sanaa, which won the Ninth Cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The restoration of the mosque, built over 800 years ago, was completed in 1996 by the Yemeni General Organization for Antiquities and the French Centre for Yemeni Studies, under the conservatorship of Marylene Barret of France and Abdullah al-Hadrami of Yemen. An inscription names the founder of the mosque as Sultan Musa bin Muhammed al-Fitti and the builder or architect as Muhammed ibn Abul-Fath ibn Arhab, but the mosque is in fact named after a little-known figure called Abbas, a holy man who is believed to be buried there. The Aga Khan Award was established in 1977 by Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, to enhance the understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture as expressed through architecture.
