PARIS.- This season again, the Design sale has attracted international collectors achieving a total of 9,089,000/£7,780,678/$10,077,273 with sell-through rates of 91% by value and 85% by lot. This result is the third highest total for a various-owner Design sale at
Christie's in Paris.
Flavien Gaillard, Head of Sale, commented: The strong results totalised today demonstrate that global collectors are continuously eager to acquire fresh to the market works of art. These great sell-through rates state once again that international collectors have a strong appetite for well-priced high quality works of art with important provenance. We are especially delighted about the results achieved for the section dedicated to the works by Jean-Michel Frank and Alberto Giacometti for the prestigious Born family which realised exceptional results such as for the Lampe Bilboquet sold 298,000. We are also very pleased with the strong results achieved for the works designed by Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret in 1950 for the Pluet familys house with a combined total of 402,125.
Collectors have also been attracted by the iconic artworks of Agathon Léonard whose 11 lots of Dancers achieved a combined total of 416,250. The top lot of this section was Vampire, a bronze sculpture executed in 1904 which sold for 185,000 against a presale estimate of 70,000-100,000.
Further highlights of the sale included a beautiful section of works by the Martel brothers which raised a lot of interest. The section realised a stunning total of 751,375. The top lot of this section was a Maquette de lArbre Cubiste which sold for 168,750, more than doubling its high estimate. We can also mention the strong price realised for Pigeon à queue plate created in 1925, which sold almost ten times its presale estimate at 47,500 against a pre-sale estimate of 5,000-7,000.
Great results have also been achieved for two works realised by Alberto Giacometti and coming from the prestigious collection of Jacquelyn Miller Matisse which more than tripled their presale estimates with the Lampadaire Osselet which sold for 286,000 (estimate: 70,000-100,000) and a Paire de lampes de table à étoile which sold for 310,000 (estimate: 80,000-120,000).
The collectors payed a beautiful tribute to Claude Lalanne whose Trône de Pauline sold for 370,000 against a presale estimate of 200,000-300,000.
