Out of Place: Works from the Pier Arts Centre Collection
Ben Nicholson, 1929 (Fireworks), Oil on board, 30 x 46cm.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.- The Dean Gallery presents Out of Place: Works from the Pier Arts Centre Collection, through Sunday, 26 June, 2005. Comprising some thirty masterpieces of twentieth-century British art from the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney, this exhibition is touring the UK during 2004 while the island gallery undergoes a major refurbishment.

Works on display form the core of the Pier Arts Centre’s permanent collection, and were gifted to the people of Orkney by Margaret Gardiner – a regular visitor to the islands and a close friend and supporter of many of the artists represented.

The exhibition contains particularly fine examples of work by artists who made St Ives a major centre for the abstract avant-garde from the late 1930s onwards. Paintings and sculpture by, amongst others, Alfred Wallis, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo, Peter Lanyon, Alan Davie and Patrick Heron are included. Out of Place provides a very rare chance to see this fascinating collection on the Scottish mainland.
