COEUR D’ALENE, ID.- Western art lovers looking for a fast-paced, high-energy auction won’t want to miss the 33rd annual March in Montana auction scheduled for March 20-21, with absentee and Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.

Collectors will have an opportunity to acquire outstanding artworks by Assiniboine (Native American) artist William Standing. The works have been in the same family for more than 50 years. The highlight, a buffalo hunt scene painted in 1925, was displayed in a bar in Eastern Montana for many years.

The auctioneers are also excited to offer several great pieces from “Charlie’s (C.M. Russell) Friends,” including Joe De Yong, Philip Goodwin, and Edgar Paxson. The De Yong pieces comprise the most desirable grouping to come to the marketplace in a long time, organizers said. The Goodwin is dated 1904 and was an illustration the artist created for Outing magazine.

Collectors are always on the lookout for artworks by Edgar Paxson. The auction features a large commissioned painting of the copper baron Marcus Daly’s ranch in Hamilton, Montana.

For many years, Western Art Week has been a favorite buying source for Western art lovers. Certain artists are crowd favorites, and none are more popular than Andy Thomas, Charles Fritz and Randy Van Beek. For the 2020 sale the auctioneers look forward to presenting works by these admired artists.

March in Montana is also distinguished by the many unique items typicaly included in the auction lineup, such as a first edition of the Russell book titled Good Medicine, which has a wonderful drawing on the inside cover by Edward Borein. For collectors of Native American items, there is a rare pictograph by Arrow Top Knot. A fine example of Molesworth club chair set with end tables is also featured. The selection also includes beadwork, weavings, cowboy items and antique firearms.

The March in Montana Auction will be held in Great Falls, Montana, in conjunction with the March in Montana Dealer Show, which will run March 19-21 during Western Art Week. Free and open to the public, these events are presented by Coeur d’Alene Galleries and the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction. The sale will begin at 11 a.m. Mountain Time both on Friday and Saturday.
