Pedro Calapez: BD 08, 2001.

SANTIAGO, SPAIN.- The Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea presents Pedro Calapez. Piso zero
through March 27, 2005. The exhibition entitled Piso zero includes works done between 2001 and 2004, some of which have never been shown before and others created expressly for this exhibition.
The exhibition is basically made up of sets of paintings, drawings and watercolours which form groups of painted surfaces in different sizes and formats, arranged on the wall or floor, i.e., placed horizontally or structured in volumes appearing to be sculptured objects, organised in predetermined arrangements. The formats used in these works are aluminium painted with acrylic paint and paper using watercolours or acrylic paint.
In this exhibition, some of the works have taken into account a specific relationship with the space and architecture of the building, owing either to the subjects dealt with or to their arrangement in the expository spaces. The interaction with the architecture of Siza Vieira inspired the creation of a series of drawings which describe in a succinct fashion the interior and exterior spaces of the building and have been subsequently used in some of my more recent paintings.
The title of the exhibition, Piso zero, is an attempt to reveal this encounter, this relationship with space, the space of the house, the space travelled and contemplated, in confrontation with the constructed space. The guideline and the arrangement of this selection of works was found in the identification of two different sides of relationships that must be present in an exhibition. On the one hand, it bears witness to the group of unpublished works though their encounter (and failed encounter) with the defined aims, and, on the other hand, it considers that which brings them closer or distances them from the series of previous works.
