CentrePasquArt Presents Carmen Calvo
Carmen Calvo, Know Not What I Hope to Achieve by Summoning You, 2004. Mixed media, collage and gold.

BIEL, SWITZELAND.- CentrePasquArt presents Carmen Calvo, through March 6, 2005. The retrospective of Carmen Calvo's oeuvre currently on show covers a time span that begins in the early seventies, with the series entitled "Collections", and ends with works dating from 2004. It is an attempt to encompass the most representative series and periods of her artistic career and includes two installations: the first, A Cage to Live In, was first shown at the Galería Luis Adelantado and later at the retrospective organised by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid; the second, Everything I Have Looked For dating from 2004, is a world premier that will displayed in this venue.

The work of the Valencian artist Carmen Calvo is a clear exponent of the cultural renewal that has taken place in Spain over the last few decades. Her solid classical training comes to the surface everytime, even in the most daring and avant-garde of her creations. It gives off a strong scent of melancholia that reflects the individual and collective anxieties of our time. But if objects appear as protagonists as a result of this selfsame accumulation of dispare images, the use of the most diverse media, from baked clay to photographic images, provides her with other iconographic elements with which to build up an expressive world capable of conjuring up everything, from memory to desire. The compositional effort that presides this aesthetic trajectory is translated into a search for order, visible in her obsession with geometry and detail, and set up as a metaphor of the anguish of life and as a continuous dialogue with everyday life, whose most trivial objects are transformed into signs of the author's deepest concerns.
