François-Xavier Lalanne, 'Singe Attablé' Table, designed 2002, patinated bronze, glass | $400,000-600,000. © Christie's Images Ltd 2020.

NEW YORK, NY.- Open for bidding from July 21-31, Creating Space: Design Online will present important works by the 20th and 21st centuries’ leading innovators of American Craft, French Art Deco, Danish Modernism, and Italian Modernism. Select highlights will be available for in-person view at Rockefeller Plaza galleries July 25-30, by appointment only. This online sale features compelling examples of François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne’s works, including a dynamic 'Singe Attablé' Table. Highlights a striking Peter Voulkos ceramic sculpture, an important Ettore Sottsass table from a special private commission, and an expressive burl masterwork by George Nakashima. Christie’s will offer exhibition viewings by appointment only in its Rockefeller Plaza galleries from July 25-30.

Underscoring the sale’s selection is a unique sofa and pair of armchairs by Paris-based designer Maria Pergay ($120,000-180,000). Pergay is known for her extraordinary ability to transform stainless steel, a material typically perceived as industrial and unfriendly, into forms that are soft and elegant. The stainless steel frame of this unique suite harmonize well with cool blue upholstery and beautiful marquetry.

Among the sale’s top lots is an extraordinary Tiffany Studios ‘Peony’ Table Lamp (c. 1900) with rare ‘Crab’ base (c. 1902), from a private collection ($400,000-600,000). The beautiful colors and contrasts in the floral pattern in the glass creates a three-dimensional illusion. This incredible sculptural quality can also be found in the naturalistic Crab base, which was executed by blowing favrile glass into the bronze structure. The base features three very detailed crabs, which were likely cast from nature.
