EAST HAMPTON, NY.- Michael Werner Gallery is presenting A.R. Penck Bronzes & Florian Krewer Paintings, the second exhibition at their East Hampton gallery, located at 50 Newtown Lane.

A.R. Penck (born Ralf Winkler in Dresden in 1939, died in 2017) is one of the most important artists from Post-War Germany. Penck started working in bronze in 1984, four years after emigrating to the West. In the 1970s, the artist, under intense scrutiny from the East German government because of his growing fame in the West, made sculptural “monuments” out of found materials such as wood, cardboard, tin cans, and string. After emigrating to the West, Penck had access to bronze and deliberately chose the medium because of its association with the history of capitalism in the West. The exhibition will highlight bronzes from the period of 1984 to 1990.

A.R. Penck participated in documenta 5. Numerous solo exhibitions worldwide include Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Tate Gallery, London; Kunsthaus, Zürich; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; and Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. The retrospective A.R. Penck: How It Works is currently on view through September 27, 2020 at the Kunstmuseum den Haag.

Florian Krewer (born in Gerolstein, Germany in 1986) studied architecture before studying painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Solo exhibitions include boogie nights, Tom Dick or Harry, Düsseldorf; pinkflavor, TRAMPS, New York; and Car Park Godiva, Michael Werner Gallery, London. Florian Krewer currently lives and works in New York.

The East Hampton gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 6pm. The safety of the gallery's staff and visitors is top priority. The gallery asks that you respect social distancing guidelines and wear a mask at all times.
