MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.- The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts presents Walker Evans and James Agee - Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, through March 27, 2005. In 1936, photographer Walker Evans and writer James Agee set out on assignment for Fortune magazine to document the daily lives of tenant families in the Deep South. Unfortunately, Fortune magazine never published their images of three sharecropper families from Hale County, Alabama. In 1941, Evans’ images and Agee’s words were produced in the now American classic book, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men. Focusing on Evan’s vintage prints and including Agee’s original manuscript, Walker Evans and James Agee: Let Us Now Praise Famous Men takes a renewed and in-depth look at their work featuring 76 photographs and corresponding text. For the 1960 edition of Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Evans reedited his photo section. Exploring the difference between the two editions, the exhibition sheds new light onto Evans’ changing perception of his work through his own editorial and philosophical revision.

This exhibition, curated by Ulrich Keller, is from the collections of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, The University of Texas at Austin, and is organized by the Ransom Center and Curatorial Assistance, Los Angeles. The exhibition is circulated by Curatorial Assistance. (An exhibition catalogue is being planned by Curatorial Assistance.)
