LONG ISLAND CITY, NY.- SculptureCenter announced the appointment of Katherine Simóne Reynolds to its Curatorial Fellowship position. As the Curatorial Fellow, Reynolds will organize SculptureCenter’s annual In Practice open call exhibition (scheduled to open in February 2021).




As a curator and an artist, Katherine Simóne Reynolds’ practice investigates emotional dialects and psychogeographies of Blackness within the “non,” and the importance of “anti-excellence.” Her work tries to physicalize emotions and experiences by constructing pieces that include portrait photography, video works, choreography, and sculpture. In the process of making subtle changes to her practice she has learned that creating an environment built on intention brings the most disarming feelings to her work. Utilizing Black embodiment and affect alongside her own personal narrative as a place of departure has made her question her own navigation of ownership, inclusion, and authenticity within a contemporary gaze. She draws inspiration from Black glamour while interrogating the notion of “authentic care.” Her practice generally deals in Blackness from her own perspective and she continuously searches for what it means to produce “Black Work.” Her work was included in In Practice: Other Objects at SculptureCenter in 2019.

Reynolds holds a curatorial position at The Luminary in Saint Louis, embarking on many projects there, including the inaugural Counterpublic, a triennial scaled to a neighborhood. She has exhibited and performed work within many spaces and institutions including SculptureCenter, New York; Pulitzer Arts Foundation, Saint Louis; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Luminary, Saint Louis; and an upcoming solo exhibition at the Knockdown Center in Queens. She has exhibited in national and international group and solo shows, has spoken at The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, The Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Black Midwest Initiative Symposium at the University of Minnesota.

In Practice
SculptureCenter's In Practice open call program supports emerging artists in creating new work for exhibition at SculptureCenter. Since 2003, In Practice has supported more than 200 emerging artists with the essential resources of space, funding, time, curatorial support, and administrative guidance to help turn their ideas into reality.

Exemplifying the spirit of SculptureCenter's mission, In Practice supports innovative artwork, fosters experimentation, and introduces audiences to under-recognized practices and new ideas. The program offers participants the opportunity to develop and present work in what is often their first institutional exhibition in New York City.
