Galerie Beyeler Basel Presents Flower Myth |

Edouard Manet, Flowers in a Crystal Vase, ca. 1882. Privatsammlung, Schenkung unter Vorbehalt an den französischen Staat, 2000.

BASEL, SWITZERLAND.- Galerie Beyeler Basel presents Flower Myth, through May 22, 2005. What happens when the apparently so sweet and charming motif of flowers meets the radical art of modernism? The Fondation Beyeler looks into this question in a comprehensive exhibition comprising a good 150 works, and taking into account for the first time the entire period from Impressionism to the present day. Evidently there are many things modern artists have been, and still are, able to say with flowers only. For major artists of the modern era Edouard Manet, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia OKeeffe, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons flowers have in fact been a key motif, on the basis of which they received and shaped crucial developments in modern art. Apart from painting and sculpture, flowers have also played a seminal role in the fields of video and installation art and in photography, which is included here in a selection more extensive than ever before in a Fondation Beyeler exhibition.
