Highlighting the sale is Property from a Park Avenue Collection. Comprising lots 1 through 37 in the sale, this exceptional collection offers examples by such prominent artists as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Georges Braque and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, among others.
The genesis of this collection was one of passion and artistic endeavor. The Collection was started in the 1950s by a man with no formal education who found a way to satisfy his interest in aesthetics and his desire to enhance his intellect. He was self-made with enough wealth to retire early, and turned his interest from business to art collecting. He chose Impressionist art as his area of concentration, quickly setting his focus on Prints. He began visiting Museums, attending lectures, going to art galleries, subscribed to periodicals about Prints and in particular, Impressionist artists. He learned how to read French since at the time, many of the periodicals were in that language. This passion was consuming and it expanded to his daughter and his grandchildren who spend hours discussing art with him and became collectors as well.
The Collection represents the efforts of two individuals who throughout their lives, thrived on the beauty of Matisse, Chagall, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, and other significant Impressionist artists. The Collection was purchased from art galleries, dealers and auction houses over the course of years. Many works were bought and sold. What remains today are those pieces which father and daughter enjoyed the most and retained for themselves. The art was viewed daily on the walls of their homes, a constant reminder of the joy in collecting and the beauty each piece conveyed.
Property of other owners features works by Josef Albers, Marc Chagall, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Keith Haring, David Hockney, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.
