What is K-pop?

Let us first begin by trying and defining what K-pop really is?

K-pop is Korean pop music, featuring bold visuals and elaborate dance moves. A hip-hop number titled “I Know,” which Seo Taiji and Boys performed at a competitive talent show gave birth to this genre.

Although the band did not win, their number became very popular, topped the charts for nearly 17 weeks, and paved the way for the development of a genre that combined Korea’s traditional pop music with America’s modern pop music.

The artists, also called idols, start training early in life. They start by auditioning for top entertainment companies in their early teens. If selected, they will spend several years learning how to sing, rap, act, and dance and training to become celebrities, handle live events, and perform on the stage. Their ultimate aim is to become idols.

You don’t just listen to K-pop but also watch it. The genre is popular for its catchy music, brilliant graphics, and elaborate dance moves. It is the dance that keeps all the elements of the genre together, which is why K-pop idols spend years training to become the best dancers in the world. Some of them travel overseas to receive training from well-known American and Canadian choreographers.

You might think that K-pop is not very popular in Canada but there is a fast-growing demographic in Canada that loves K-pop. This demographic is mostly made up of the younger generation of Canadians who are willing to embrace and try a lot of new things including K-pop and real money online casino games. Keep reading to learn more about the top K-pop companies. And If are one of those Canadian players who enjoy playing real money casino games, you should check out Spin Casino.

In this business, it boils down to which K-pop Company treats their idols well! We give you a list of the best K-pop entertainment companies for foreigners below as well as the top entertainment companies in Korea for K-pop.

SM Entertainment
Launched by Soo-man Lee in 1989, SM Entertainment is the biggest entertainment company in Korea 2020. The credit of being the first K-pop entertainment company to establish training centres for aspiring K-pop idols also goes to SM Entertainment.

Among its first idol groups were H.O.T, an all-boys band, and S.E.S, an all-girls group in the mid-nineties. Later, the company began expanding into foreign markets with idol groups such as Girls’ Generation and TVXQ.

Its newest artists are NCT 127 and Red Velvet. Also, it plans comebacks for older idol groups such as Super Junior, EXO, and TVXQ.

YG Entertainment
One of the top three Korean entertainment companies, the others being SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, YG Entertainment has had its fair share of controversies.

But these controversies have failed to tarnish its reputation. The company is associated with internationally acclaimed bands such as 2NEI, BLACKPINK, and Big Bang. The idols have been invited to perform at some of the top entertainment and fashion events across the world. The company’s success inspired Tencent, a Chinese social network, to invest US$85 million in it and acquire a 4.5% share of it.

Cube Entertainment
This company saw its best days when it was the home of the idol groups 4 Minute and BEAST. Today, these groups are no longer with the company and the company is now advocating groups such as (G)I-DLE, CLC, BTOB, and PENTAGON.

It has also begun expanding into foreign markets, and as a part of this expansion, its idol groups are partnering with foreign bands.

P Nation
One of the youngest Korean entertainment companies, P Nation was launched in May 2020. The company has already attracted a lot of attention because of its founder PSY, who sang the popular number “Gangnam Style.” The agency has already partnered with big names in K-pop entertainment such as Jessi, a Korean American rapper and singer, and the K-pop couple E’Dawn and HyunA.

JYP Entertainment
Launched in 1997 by Park Jin-Young, JPY Entertainment is one of the biggest entertainment companies in South Korea. Its service portfolio includes music production, talent agency, record label, concert production, music publishing, and event management. It also operates many divisions and subsidiaries all over the world.
JPY Entertainment is associated with well-known idol groups such as JJ Project, 2PM, Day6, Stray Kids, Itzy, Twice, and GOT7.

Big Hit Entertainment
Established by Bang Si-Hyuk in 2005, Big Hit Entertainment is the manager of the internationally acclaimed boy bands TXT and BTS along with Lee Hyun, the soloist. The company is well-known for its style of managing idol groups, which includes the use of social networks to interact with fans, the harnessing of fan energy, and the creation of multimedia content related to the idols.
