SALZBURG.- The Museum der Moderne Salzburg announced a new hire for an important curatorial position on our team: on June 1, 2021, Dr. Kerstin Stremmel M. A. will start as head of collection, photography and media art. Kerstin Stremmel was selected from a field of twenty-two outstanding candidates from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

Kerstin Stremmel is a photography curator of international renown with extensive experience in the management of photography collections. After completing her training as a documentalist at the Fachhochschule für Bibliotheks- und Dokumentationswesen in Cologne, she studied art history, German language and literature, and pedagogy in Cologne and Bonn. Her doctoral thesis was dedicated to a study of the more recent photographic representation of classics of visual art.

Kerstin Stremmel has been a correspondent for Neue Zürcher Zeitung since 1998 and written for Camera Austria, Photonews, Eikon, Kunstforum, and other periodicals. She has also authored numerous monographs and catalogue essays and held teaching posts at the Zurich School of Art and Design (HGKZ) and the University of Cologne. As a freelance curator, she has realized projects at Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Museo Picasso, Málaga; and Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. Besides these engagements, she has been a staff documentalist at the Theaterwissenschaftliche Sammlung at Schloss Wahn, one of the world’s largest collections of theatrical items, since 2013. At the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Stremmel is currently curating the exhibition Tell Me What You See. Skrein Photo Collection, which is scheduled to open on June 12, 2021.

Director Thorsten Sadowsky: “I am exceptionally pleased that Kerstin Stremmel, an experienced and versatile photography curator with an excellent international network, has agreed to join us as head of the Museum der Moderne’s photography and media art collection. Ms. Stremmel boasts broad-based expertise in historic and contemporary photography; with her curatorial profile and engaging personality, she promises to be an excellent addition to our team. Her strong interest in the performing arts makes her a perfect fit for a museum in Salzburg, where, more than in any other city, stagecraft defines public life.”
