The Many Faces of David Diaz, Illustrator

MUSKEGON, MI.- The Muskegon Museum of Art presents The Many Faces of David Diaz, Illustrator, on view through June 26, 2005. This exhibition, assembled by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, features approximately 55 artworks by illustrator David Diaz. Some of Diaz’s books deal with current social issues. It is in this vein Diaz approached Smoky Night (1994), based on Los Angeles street riots. Sketches Diaz made while on a trip to Brazil inspired the book’s illustrations, gouache paintings framed by bold borders with intricate photographic collages as backgrounds. Other books have extended Diaz’s horizons and guided him to try a variety of media and styles, including the vibrant computer-generated art in The Pot That Juan Built (2002, by Nancy Andrews-Goebel) and the soft pastel images in Angel Face (2002, by Sarah Weeks). The bold, stylized work of David Diaz has appeared in the Atlantic Monthly and the Washington Post, among other national publications, and in works commissioned for American Express, Perrier, PepsiCo, and Benetton. In addition to receiving the 1995 Caldecott Medal for Smoky Night, Diaz has received honors from Parents’ Choice, American Illustration, Communication Arts, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and the New York Art Directors Club. This exhibition is being generously supported by David and Carol Folkert and by the Gerber Foundation.
