NEW YORK, NY.- Independent announced the participating galleries for the upcoming edition of the fair, taking place for the first time at Cipriani South Street in the historic Battery Maritime Building, New York, from September 9-12, 2021.

The 2021 edition of Independent takes its inspiration from Independent Projects, a special edition of the fair at the former Dia Center for the Arts in 2014. Galleries have been invited to present specially commissioned, museum caliber presentations by leading artists that are both relevant and timely to our current moment.

The opening of Independent in September will coincide with the re-opening of the iconic Battery Maritime Building for the first time in several decades. The historical restoration includes three exhibitor halls flooded with natural light, high ceilings in the Beaux-Arts style, waterfront vistas and an outdoor terrace for the café, bar and restaurant in collaboration with Cipriani.

Elizabeth Dee, Founder and CEO of Independent, said: “September will mark a major moment of renewal for the New York art world, and we’re looking forward to welcoming our beloved community back to Independent. Our new home in the magnificently restored Battery Maritime Building provides the perfect backdrop for showcasing how galleries, institutions and artists have responded to the unprecedented events of our recent history and how they will lead us forward to the future.”
