Doyle to auction Fine Art on June 9
Richard Maury (1935-2020), Florence, 1968, Oil on canvas laid to panel, 31 1/2 x 39 3/8 inches. Est. $6,000-9,000. Lot 96.

NEW YORK.- Doyle's auction of Fine Art on Wednesday, June 9 at 11am will offer a wide range of affordable paintings, prints and sculpture by prominent artists spanning the late 19th through the 20th centuries. Exciting opportunities abound in this popular auction category for seasoned buyers and new collectors alike!

The public is invited to the exhibition on view Saturday, June 5 through Monday, June 7 at Doyle, located at 175 East 87th Street in New York. View the catalogue and place bids at DOYLE.com

An American artist living and working in Florence, Italy, Richard Maury (1935-2020) is renowned for his precise realistic images. A glowing depiction of Florence in the sale encapsulates Maury’s transcendent rendering of natural light (est. $6,000-9,000).

Bessarabian-born Realist painter Tully Filmus (1903-1998) was well-known for his fun paintings of dancing Rabbis, as well as his meticulous portraits. An elaborate scene entitled Rehearsal Break shows Filmus telling a story with light and shadows (est. $7,000-9,000).

The daughter of painters Milton and Sally Avery, March Avery (b. 1932) was self-trained – evidently not receiving guidance from her parents. Afternoon in Italy is a prime example of Avery’s use of warm colors and flattened, abstracted forms (est. $6,000-9,000).

Beaux Arts alum Bernard Pothast (1882-1966) was a highly-regarded genre painter who often depicted scenes of peasant families. Admiring the Baby is indicative of Pothast’s renderings of 19th Century rustic scenes of private moments (est. $5,000-8,000).

The beloved Romanian painter Stefan Luchian (1869-1916) battled Multiple Sclerosis throughout his life, even painting with brushes tied to his wrist when his condition worsened. Luchian’s bright Still Life with Flowers and a Jug is an excellent example of the great influence the Impressionists had on his work (est. $5,000-8,000).
