ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The Memorial Art gallery of the University of rochester presents A High Style: Alex Katz’s Ada and Alex Portfolio, on view through July 31, 2005 in the Lockhart Gallery. Arriving on the New York art scene in the 1950s, Alex Katz rejected the fevered emotion and radical abstraction of the popular Abstract Expressionist movement. With a cool, objective style and the use of family and friends as primary subject matter, Katz gained a respected position within the contemporary art world. Throughout his successful, ongoing career Katz has defied easy categorization by forging his own “high style”. The Alex and Ada Portfolio (1990) is a set of 8 large-scale prints based upon earlier paintings of himself and his wife Ada, his favorite and most frequent subject.
