ALLENTOWN, PA.- The Allentown Art Museum presents Linda McCartney’s Sixties—Portrait of an Era. Linda Eastman McCartney (1941-1998) covered the American music scene first as house photographer at New York City’s famous Fillmore East concert hall, and then as the pioneering photographer for the start-up publication Rolling Stone. In 1967, on assignment in London, McCartney met the Beatles, marrying Paul McCartney two years later. Her work was largely inspired by two American icons of photography, Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, and her shots of frozen moments and candid glimpses clearly show this inspiration. Her spontaneous photographs of such musical greats such as the Who, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin capture not only her subject’s personalities, but the flavor of an entire era. McCartney is considered one of the most distinguished women photographers of our time. Her work has been exhibited at such international venues as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
This is the first museum exhibition since her death in 1998 of McCartney’s work in her native country. Originating in 1999 at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, the show, composed of fifty-one black and white and color photographs, has been on a back-to-back tour of museums across the United States and Canada. Allentown is the only Pennsylvania venue. Dr. Christine I. Oaklander, Director of Collections and Exhibitions, will be the site curator.
