NEW YORK, NY.- The New-York Historical Society, the oldest museum in New York City, announced that Shayne Doty has been appointed Chief Strategy Officer. In this role, Doty will work in close partnership with New-York Historical’s President and CEO Louise Mirrer, the Board of Trustees, and Vice President for Development Matthew Bregman to identify and implement strategies for growth in contributed revenue and fundraising activities, with a specific focus on the current capital campaign for the Museum’s building expansion and New-York Historical’s partnership with the American LGBTQ+ Museum.

Last June, New-York Historical announced a major expansion of its building on Central Park West that will add more than 70,000 square feet to its footprint and also host the permanent home of the American LGBTQ+ Museum, New York’s first museum dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and culture. The design by Robert A.M. Stern Architects will provide New-York Historical with additional classrooms for the Academy for American Democracy program, galleries, collections study areas, and a state-of-the-art compact storage facility for the renowned Patricia D. Klingenstein Library.

“New-York Historical has existed for nearly 217 years, adapting with the centuries, so it is with great pleasure that Shayne Doty joins our staff to help shepherd our next evolution: expanding our Central Park West home and welcoming the American LGBTQ+ Museum under our roof,” said Dr. Mirrer. “Shayne’s consistent track record of surpassing financial goals and recruiting new lead donors will go a long way as we work toward the completion of our expansion project and ensure that LGBTQ+ history and our program tracing democracy back to Greek and Roman times have a continuing home at New-York Historical.”

“I’m truly excited to join New-York Historical’s team as we work together to bring the next stage of the expansion project to fruition,” said Doty. “I’m passionate about the mission of the institution and eager to get started so we can tell the important stories of previous generations of Americans and the LGBTQ+ community as well as give a greater share of Americans a fuller comprehension of democracy.”

Among Doty’s other responsibilities: participating in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and investigating new opportunities to expand New-York Historical’s donor base; building and managing a portfolio of donors and prospects; and identifying potential prospects for New-York Historical’s Board of Trustees.

Since 2019, Doty has served as the senior vice president of development at the Paley Center for Media in New York, where he initiated and led a successful National Endowment for the Humanities planning grant for an upcoming exhibition. Prior to that, he held several roles at Asia Society, including managing director of philanthropy, where he raised funds for the exhibition, The Progressive Revolution: Modern Art for a New India, from Mumbai, Delhi, London, and the U.S. He is a trained organist and obtained a degree from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, a Masters of Music from Southern Methodist University, and a BA from Duke University. He has served on the board of advisors of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts and lives in New York City.
