Art Is Powerful - Especially In Your Own Home

As seasoned artists know, the production of art isn’t simply something that pursues aesthetic goals. The ambition and emotion that art provides not only helps people to connect, but it has wider societal benefits. One study, published by the Project for Public Spaces, found that art can be so powerful that public pieces inspire inter-personal connection to the point of enhancing civic participation. The same effect is true for the home, where day-to-day observation of art will stimulate you mentally, and when it comes to guests, will provoke conversation and connections. The trick? Displaying your art in such a way that it enables these discussions.

Proper framing

Framing prints and paintings is the most simple way to think about how you’re putting art on display - and it’s not as simple as you might think. Not only are there material, or practical considerations to take care of, as the Library of Congress explores, but there’s also the fact of how best to display your art. Picture frames come in different styles - minimalist, without a border; thin borders; metallic; inner-framed; and so on. How you choose to deploy the frame will help to accentuate your art. A large, bold piece can sometimes benefit from being inner-framed; by contrast, borderless frames can evoke emotion in minimalist pieces.

The future?

What about non-physical pieces? The New York Times highlights the exploratory work already being conducted by big-name artists when it comes to the frontiers of video. Digital photo frames have long been a great way for homeowners to show off their memories in the home. This can advance, now; holographic pieces can project artwork into thin air. Projectors can replace the entire texture of a wall. Get creative, and think about how a simple trick of the light can help expand your mind - and your guests.

Piecing together

Not all art is photo-framed, of course. Physical art installations are common in homes, and many of the souvenirs and gifts you pick up on trips abroad will constitute art that conveys both a feeling and a memory. Using these pieces as the art stands themselves is an interesting way to convey that message - make the entire solution, stand and all, your art.

With that, your home can truly feel alive. Art is a living and breathing experience, evoking emotions and provoking critique. It’s a great way to bring life to the home, and doing so effectively is all about your display.
