Eco-friendly Technologies To Green Your Life

In the past two decades, environmentally safe technologies have gained widespread recognition. Our planet is facing a myriad of threats- global warming, deforestation, scarcity of natural resources, habitat loss of animals, environment pollution and many more. While some are inevitable, the others’ can be attenuated with the combined effort of conscious people. To be able to do that, one has to commit oneself to sustainable technologies and products. The use of green technology can keep the environment out of harm’s way and reduce our carbon footprints. Look into these 5 technologies which ensure just that-

1. Solar panels
With the advancement of science, solar panels are now designed smarter than ever. The cost of electricity is increasing day by day, so investing in solar panels can save money in the long run. The traditional way of producing electricity- through burning fossil fuel and nuclear energy, produces tons of greenhouse gasses. More than 8 million people died in 2018 from fossil fuel pollution, according to research from Harvard University. On the other hand, solar panels produce clean energy. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory affirms that each household that switches to solar energy stops 7.7 tons of toxic greenhouse gases from being released. Lucky for us, there are portable solar panels on the market too!

2. Electric cars
One of the biggest contributors of environmental injustice is the automotive industry. An average car engine emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. That is why it is a wise decision to opt for electric cars. According to a study conducted by the ICCT, an electric car is almost 30% cleaner over its life cycle compared to even the most efficient internal combustion engine vehicles. BMW electric vehicles are something to look out for, if you are new to the idea. They have futuristic design, contemporary styling, moderate mileage and are surprisingly a great value for money. You may also have heard of plug-in hybrid cars- which offer supreme mileage by combining an electric motor with a traditional fuel engine. The BMW i8 Coupe is just that, it has all the fuel efficiency benefits but little to no environmental hazards.

3. Vertical Farming
Vertical farming works by planting crops in layered stacks rather than horizontally. Crops can be planted there hydroponically or aeroponically or by traditional soil growing method. With arable lands declining, vertical farming is the future of food production and nutrition. It uses 95% less water, prohibits the use of toxic fertilizers and pesticides, exponentially increases crop production and maximizes profits. Vertical farming can feed overpopulated cities if done on a large or industrial scale. It can tackle climate change to some extent. But there are still lots of challenges to overcome to fully establish this technology for mankind to utilize.

4. Bioplastic
We cannot deny the detrimental effects plastic has on our planet. It has encroached into the marine system and put the lives of the animals there at great risk. Head of UN Environment’s coral reef unit, Jerker Tamelander, states that marine plastic pollution is affecting more than 800 marine species through ingestion, entanglement and the change of habitat. Plastic also stays in the environment for thousands of years if you don't recycle it. It’s only imperative that you try your best to switch to biodegradable or biomass-borne plastics called ‘bioplastics’. They are much more planet-safe.

Green technologies are the one of the most crucial ways through which we can keep our planet free from jeopardy. These technologies still have a long way to go, they need more investments and research. But incorporating them into our lives will surely bear results in the future.
