PORTLAND, MAINE.- The Portland Museum of Art is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Rockwell Kent's arrival on rugged Monhegan Island, off the coast of Maine, with a groundbreaking exhibition, Rockwell Kent: The Mythic and the Modern. The Museum will bring together more than 150 of the artist's paintings, drawings, and prints, many of which have not been seen publicly for generations. Kent's breathtakingly beautiful land and seascapes will be featured, as well as dazzling examples of his richly colored reverse paintings on glass and his inventive, jazz-age pen and ink drawings of modern life for popular American magazines such as Vanity Fair. Kent's iconic drawings that brought life to Moby Dick and Paul Bunyan will also be on view. World-class museums lending to the exhibition include The Morgan Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Pushkin and Hermitage Museums in Russia.

This exhibition is made possible by grants from the Henry Luce Foundation, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, generous support from Scott and Isabelle Black, corporate sponsorship from Bank of America and Condé Nast Publications and Vanity Fair, and support from Steven and Christine Goldthwaite. Media support has been provided by WCSH 6 and the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram.
