BOISE, IDAHO.- The Boise Art Museum presents Georgia O'Keeffe - Visions of the Sublime, on view through Monday, September 19, 2005. Visions of the Sublime is an extraordinary exhibition that re-examines the work of one of America’s most iconic artists. O’Keeffe was a visionary who provided us with new ways to view our surroundings and explore our inner selves. O’Keeffe said, “I have picked flowers where I found them – have picked up sea shells and rocks and pieces of wood. . . I have used these things to say what is to me the wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it.” This comment connects O’Keeffe to the aesthetic concept of the sublime, with its sensation of infinite space and evocative color and light. This exhibition, spanning more than five decades, features 30 paintings and one sculpture by O’Keeffe, together with photographs by O’Keeffe’s husband, Alfred Stieglitz, and images of O’Keeffe by noted American photographer Todd Webb. Complementing these works are 18 paintings by earlier American artists that exemplify the concept of the sublime in landscape painting. Included are works by Albert Bierstadt, Martin Johnson Heade and George Inness from the Hunter Museum of American Art and the Butler Institute of American Art. Curated by Joseph S. Czestochowski. Organized by International Arts, Memphis, TN.
