Roland Auctions NY celebrates big on New Year's Day with top grossing auction of the past year
Pair of gilt bronze Neoclassical-style urn-form wine coolers, Sold for $46,875.



GLEN COVE, NY.- Roland Auctions NY in Glen Cove, NY kicked off the New Year in style, with their New Year’s Day sale turning out to be their highest-grossing single day, and highest-grossing per lot, auction of the past year.

The New Year’s Day auction on January1st, 2022, featured selections from multiple estates with a spotlight on the very impressive collection of a socialite from European nobility with properties at The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan and in Lloyd Harbor, Long Island. The collection offered everything from Louis XIV to Mid- Century Modern, along with art, silver, jewelry and decorative items.

The New Year’s Day auction enjoyed quite a few surprises and sleepers that sold well over their estimates, most notably a 19th C. Chinese "Hundred Deer" Hu-Form Vase. 19th century Chinese famille rose Hu-form vase, decorated in enamels with the 'hundred deer' motif, depicting a continuous scene of deer frolicking in grassy meadows beside a river, all within a rocky, mountainous landscape with pine trees, the shoulder flanked by a pair of coral-red, dragon-scroll handles. [18" H x 13" Diam.], which sold for $54,000, a Framed Tibetan Thangka, framed under glass [Frame: 52 1/2" H x 33" W], selling for $43,750 and a pair of Gilt Bronze Wine Coolers, Neoclassical-style urn-form wine coolers, decorated with swags and garlands, gadrooning and ram's heads, the lid fluted with a bone finial. [31" H x 14 1/2" Diam.] that quickly shot up to the selling price of $46,875.

Antique furniture also did impressively well, with a pair of George III Mahogany Games Tables, carved mahogany serpentine fold-over tables, possibly Scottish, circa 1765, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, having re-entrant corners, two-tier scrolled decoration to the frieze and quatrefoil motifs to the front legs, are possibly the output of a Scottish cabinet-maker emulating the latest French influenced fashions to emerge from London. [29" H x 39 1/2" W x 19" D ], going for $37,500, an English Mahogany Breakfront Cabinet, C. 1800, Very fine late George III Period. Featured in "The Dictionary Of English Furniture From The Middle Ages To The Late Georgian Period" (3 volumes) by Edwards, Ralph & Maquoid, Percy, Page 94, fig. 38 (considered by many experts as The Bible of English Furniture). [112 H x 94 W x 22 D (310 x 249 x 56 cm)], which sold for $10,000, a very unique 18th Century Tortoiseshell & Walnut Cabinet on stand. Continental tortoiseshell veneered walnut cabinet, fitted with drawers surrounding a central door opening to three drawers. Early 18th century. [59 1/2" H x 37" W x 12" D], selling for $5625 and two Carved Gilt Wood Belter Chairs, with ornate figural and foliate carved backs, on casters, upholstered in cream silk jacquard fabric. [39" H x 19 1/2" W x 22" D], selling for $5625.

Jewelry highlights included a Van Cleef & Arpels Fleurette Necklace & Earrings. Van Cleef & Arpels "Fleurette" 18K white gold and diamond necklace and earrings set, each fleurette motif with seven round diamonds, IF to VVS clarity, D-E color, which sold for $23,750 and a Cartier "Love" Bracelet, 18K yellow gold, size 18, stamped QOR531, AU750". In original box, which went for $5312.

An exquisite selection of decorative items also helped make the auction so successful, with offerings like a pair Palatial Gilt & Silvered Bronze Candelabra, each having 7 arms around a center candle post, on a Corinthian column base. [49" H x 19 1/2" across arms; Base: 13" x 13"]. Sold for $8750, and Inlaid Faux Tortoiseshell Tea Box. Ornate allover shell and gold inlaid faux tortoiseshell tea box, on carved mother-of-pearl paw feet, the inside compartment cover decorated with bees. 20th century. [2" H x 7 1/2" W x 5" D], selling for $12,500, a pair of Palm Tree Gilt Bronze Candlesticks, possibly retailed by Tiffany's. [13 1/2" H x 5" Diam. (base)], selling for $5312, a pair of Bronze Dore & Onyx Pedestals, with gilt bronze mounts. [46 1/2" H x 12" W x 12" D (base); 10" W x 10" D (top)], which sold for $5625, a pair of Buccellati Italian Silver Candlesticks, marked on bases Buccellati / 925 / Made in Italy, the octagonal bases and reeded stems mounted with alternating lapis lazuli and malachite stones. 20th century. Provenance: Sotheby's, New York "Collections: Silver, Vertu, And Russian Works Of Art" sale, October 14, 2015, lot 304. [7" H ], selling for $4375 and a Victorian Brass & Stained Glass Hall Lantern. leaded glass hall lantern; late 19th century. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, October 8, 1993, lot 37; Sotheby's, New York "Property From The Collection Of Robert S Pirie Volume III: Fine And Decorative Arts" sale, December 5, 2015, lot 3. [35 1/2" H x 11" W x 11" D], which sold for $10,000.

Additional Chinese decorative pieces included a Pair Late 19th C. Chinese Porcelain Jardinieres. Pair of Chinese porcelain and gilt bronze mounted jardinieres, late 19th century. Provenance: Bonhams, Los Angeles, European Furniture, Decorative and Fine Arts sale, September 19, 2017, lot 87. [16" H x 14 1/2" Diam.], selling for $11,875 and a Chinese Gilt & Enamel Vase. Chinese vase with gilt and enamel decoration on a blue ground. [14 1/2" H x 8" Diam.] Sold for $4375.

Featured in the fine art arena were a Classical Figural Nude Landscape, oil on canvas painting depicting classical figures in a landscape, apparently not completed. Not signed. [79" H x 53 1/4" W], which sold for $16,250 and a Ferdinand Loyen du Puigaudeau (French, 1864-1930) oil on canvas landscape of a harvest sunset with a farmhouse and bales of hay. [Art: 24 1/2" H x 29" W; Frame: 30" H x 35" W], selling for $15,000.
