WATERVILLE, MAINE.-The Colby College Museum of Art is the sole repository of the entire archive of prints by Terry Winters, and for the first time the museum will present selections from the archive, including more than 150 of the artist’s prints spanning the past two decades. Terry Winters: Prints & Sequences, on view through November 6, 2005, will display Winters's work in a variety of printing techniques -- lithography, etching, aquatint, woodcut, linoleum cut, and Mixografia.

Winter works serially, and this exhibition will allow viewers to explore works within and across series. Winters creates both formal and conceptual links between individual prints in a series as well as in his work in other media. Terry Winters: Prints & Sequences will show a number of series in their entirety.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an essay by Clifford S. Ackley, curator of prints and drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, that contextualizes the artist’s printmaking practice within the medium’s history.

According to Ackley, "It is an all-too-familiar cliche in histories of graphic art that many of the most expressive original prints are those created by painters: Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, Goya, Picasso -- the list goes on. This cliche is also a reality," he wrote in an essay about Winters. "Painters -- whether active in their own workshops, or working with professional printers as do Winters and the majority of his contemporaries -- are generally more inclined to introduce fresh imagery into their prints and are also often more inventive in discovering new approaches to the use of print media."
