NEW YORK, NY.- America’s oldest art auction, the historical New York City based Salmagundi Club will host a two-day fundraising auction event, being co-presented by Roland Auctions NY, on Friday, April 8th at 8pm and on Saturday, April 9th at 12 noon.

Both sessions will be held live at the Salmagundi Club at 47 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10003, as well as online through Live Auctioneers. Roland Auctions NY will be conducting the actual auctions, on behalf of Salmagundi Club, to spotlight many of the club’s top emerging and established artists. The auction will feature all original portraits, still life, landscapes, photography and other genres, with all purchases to support both the artist and the club.

Salmagundi auctions have operated continuously since the late 1870’s. “With starting prices as low as $150, all set at 30% of typical gallery prices, this is a unique opportunity to own a piece of American art history”, says Nick Dawes, Salmagundi Chairman. Over 200 original works of art, including 20 historic works from Salmagundi Club’s archive collection will be offered, with bidding live, by absentee, phone or internet.

All works offered are by Salmagundi Club members and are both affordable and professionally framed. A unique addition is the Judy Daniele Marsh bequest of thirty paintings, most purchased 20 years ago and recently donated in memory of Judy Daniele Marsh, a longtime patron of the club.

Lots 1 through 64 will be auctioned as part of the festivities on Friday evening, April 8th at 8.00PM, along with an intimate $150 per person (open to the public) pre-auction dinner in the Skylight Gallery and Dining Room at Salmagundi Club beginning at 6pm. The remaining 150 lots will be auctioned on Saturday, April 9th at 12 Noon. Both sessions will be presented live and online.

Salmagundi Chairman Nick Dawes will host the pre-auction dinner on Friday, April 8th, which includes a cocktail reception, a tour of the auction by Jacob Collins, a three-course sit down dinner and part one of the auction itself.

Both auctions will be jointly promoted by another New York institution, Roland Auctions NY, who were downtown neighbors to the Salmagundi Club for over 40 years, before relocating to a much larger space in Long Island’s North Shore “Gold Coast” in Glen Cove, NY in 2018. “We are honored and delighted to be helping Salmagundi Club with this historic event”, said William Roland, company founder and President, who will also serve as auctioneer for a portion of the event.

Salmagundi and the art it represents is enjoying a renaissance of late, as evident in a very recent Wall Street Journal article on highly acclaimed artist Jacob Collins, President of Salmagundi, along with coverage in various other publications, focusing on how Realist art is enjoying a major wave of popularity as a branch of contemporary art.

In the Wall Street Journal story, “Painter Jacob Collins Looks Outside The Art World To Build An Audience For Classical Realism”, they explain that “Mr. Collins became president of New York’s Salmagundi Club in the fall, which was founded by artists and collectors in 1871 to champion representational art””. Mr. Collins, 57,” is thriving in an alternate art universe that he, like the energy force that is accelerating the expansion of the physical cosmos, is laboring to enlarge”. To that end, Mr. Collins plans to “mount regular exhibitions at the Salmagundi Club, as well as panel discussions about aesthetics and collecting”. “We’d like those collectors we admire to become leaders, to explain why they collect what they collect,” he says.

All original works by both emerging and established artists are being offered at the two-day auction on April 8th and 9th.
