SOUTHAMPTON, NY.- Phillips announced a live auction of 121 Modern and Contemporary prints and multiples that will take place in the Southampton gallery at 1 Hampton Rd, Southampton, NY 11968 on Saturday 25 June starting at 12pm EDT. The exhibition will start on Friday, 10 June and be open through Saturday, 25 June. Featuring iconic editioned works by Roy Lichtenstein, Banksy, Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns, Joan Mitchell, Frank Stella and Henri Matisse to name a few. In-person bidding will take place in our Southampton gallery and the entire sale will be available to view at Phillips.com starting on 10 June.

Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Worldwide Co-Heads of Editions and Deputy Chairpersons, Americas, said, “The New York Editions team is excited to present a two-week exhibition culminating in a Saturday afternoon auction of thoughtfully curated works by blue-chip artists from our elegant Southampton gallery located in the center of town. Our teams and auctioneer will be there to create a live auction experience in addition to bidding by telephone and on our online bidding platform. Everyone can take part with estimates range from $500 to $100,000. Come in, see what you like, get your paddles and bid by the beach!”

Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series was the final major series the artist produced before his death in 1997. Nude Reading considers the traditional art historical genre of the female nude through the lens of Pop Art and marks Lichtenstein’s return to his iconic 1960s comic book style, consisting of Benday dot patterns, bright colors, and bold lines. Published and printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd, Lichtenstein’s Nude Reading reflects a maturity of style which perfectly integrates the elements of his earlier work, imparting layered references and myriad meanings to the composition.

Julian Opie is a preeminent artist of the New British Sculpture Movement, pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic practice through his exploration of and experimentation with a variety of media. In Siân Walking; Jeremy Walking in Coat; Verity Walking; and Kris Walking, Opie takes advantage of lenticular printing to produce the illusion of depth and movement. Each of Opie’s lenticular acrylic panels include approximately twenty images that appear to transform into one another to generate a figure walking endlessly on a loop. Thus, when a viewer walks past these works of art, their movement is mimicked in the print.

Portrait de Jacqueline de face II (Portrait of Jacqueline from the Front II), 1962 depicts Jacqueline Roque, whom Picasso met when she was 26 and he was 72; they married, making her his second and last wife. Married 11 years until his death in 1973, Picasso drew her hundreds of times, more than any other lover, and this large linoleum cut is one of the most important graphic images he created. Additionally, Portrait de Jacqueline de face II (Portrait of Jacqueline from the Front II) is one of Picasso’s most important linocuts and considered one of the key images of Jacqueline. Phillips holds the highest price achieved for a linocut by Picasso from the 2019 sale of Portrait de jeune fille, d’après Cranach le Jeune (Portrait of a Young Woman, After Cranach the Younger), 1958.

Banksy’s classically irreverent 2009 screenprint Donut (Strawberry) was released shortly after the original painting of the same subject matter was completed. This differentiates the work from many of his other prints that were completed based on images that the artist originally stenciled on walls. The screenprint was released as an edition of 299, a smaller edition size when compared to many of his other images printed in much larger runs of up to 600. The edition size is a nod to the donut super chain Krispy Kreme’s closing of 299 stores due to financial trouble in 2007. This iconic image is signed, accompanied by its original Certificate of Authenticity from Pest Control and offers a more colorful flavor than his Donut (Chocolate) version depicting the same scene.
