LOS ANGELES, CA.- Kohn Gallery announced the representation of Brooklyn-based artist Alicia Adamerovich, who will hold her first solo exhibition with Kohn Gallery in the beginning of 2023.
Alicia Adamerovich’s works are depictions of introspective journeys that traverse the subconscious, a world that is often achingly familiar yet wholly alien. This dichotomy of mixed emotions: joy and pain, attraction and disdain, and safety and danger, foray into a terrain filled with apprehension, anxiety and disquiet.
“We are so honored to welcome Alicia’s voice into the program,” said Joshua Friedman, partner of Kohn Gallery. “Her compositions paint a foreign way of feeling, inviting the viewer to explore the symphony of a new visual vernacular.”
The amorphous shapes in Adamerovich’s works are anthropomorphic and seductive in nature, their soft curvatures taking inspiration alternately from human forms and creatures from 80s sci-fi flicks. The physicality of her mediums—from sculpture to woodwork—allows for an interplay between negative space and frame. The darkened color palette, complemented by glowing orbs and barren, psychological landscapes recalls Robert Zehnder, while pointed appendages lend a structural quality, evoking Angela Heisch’s biomorphic forms.
These points of reference further expand into texture, with layers of paint building upon a foundational pumice gel, adding a rough, organic presence to the picture plane. The light illuminates her surreal subjects almost as if the viewer is glimpsing something they shouldn’t, bringing theatricality and questions of intentionality to the work.
Indeed, Adamerovich is acutely aware of her audience and invites them to take part in the creation, stating: “I don’t wish for my frames to be vessels for the work, but instead to be extensions of the line… making connections with both the viewer’s body and mind. Immersing oneself is bringing the experience closer to my own experience of creation.”
Alicia Adamerovich was born in Latrobe, PA and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. She received her Bachelor's of Design from Pennsylvania State University in 2013. Adamerovich has been a recipient of several residencies including the Del Vaz Projects Residency, Los Angeles, CA; Moly Sabata Artist Residency, Albert Gleizes Foundation, Sablons, FR; and Palazzo Monti Residency, Brescia, IT. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout France, Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Canada.
