Remai Modern hosts most comprehensive presentation of works by Tino Sehgal in Canada
Remai Modern presents three works by the artist, all of which include contributions by people in the community.

SASKATOON.- This summer at Remai Modern, visitors are invited to experience a distinctive exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Tino Sehgal.

Through selected works that span the breadth of his practice, the museum plays host to what Sehgal calls constructed situations — ephemeral art experiences activated through encounters between the museum visitor and the individuals enacting his work.

Sehgal is a leading international figure working in the realm of live arts. His work invites audiences to reconsider the way art is produced, presented, and received. Remai Modern presents three works by the artist, all of which include contributions by people in the community. Two of the projects, Yet untitled and This Situation (solo), will be enacted by local dancers and thinkers. The third project, This Success/This Failure, features children participating in Remai Modern summer art camps.

“For the past two decades, Tino Sehgal has developed an acclaimed body of work that redirects the museum experience into one of conversations, ideas, exchange, and relationships. We look forward to welcoming visitors into this one-of-a-kind project,” said Troy Gronsdahl, Curator of Performance and Public Practice. “As we emerge from an extended period of isolation into a moment of upheaval and uncertainty, many feel anxious and overwhelmed, with many of our social experiences being virtual, disembodied and passive. Live art offers a moment to slow down, to re-engage with the body and connect with people and ideas.”

Art can offer moments of respite, even optimism. Sehgal’s work challenges us to reconsider our engagement with materials and rethink the role of art, the museum, and what can be advanced through ingenuity and play. His works are realized through a choreography of many people and relations, moving towards an experience that is embodied and social.

Yet untitled, in Remai Modern’s Connect Gallery, is a subtle piece comprised of choreographed movement and voice. The work is accompanied by a selection of sculptures from Remai Modern’s collection, which add another visual dimension to the work.

This Success/This Failure will be enacted in the Feature Gallery by hundreds of children from the museum’s summer camps. This Situation (solo) takes place in the museum’s interstitial space, where visitors will encounter an individual who will engage them in conversation.

The exhibition is on view from July 16 to September 4.

Tino Sehgal is a German-Indian artist born in 1976 in London, England. He currently lives and works in Berlin.
