LONDON.- New and recent work by contemporary female photographers will feature in a new book by
Prix Pictet, the leading global award in photography and sustainability. Showcasing some of the finest photographers creating powerful imagery around the world today, Collage features the recent work of 64 women photographers on the theme of sustainability who have previously been shortlisted or nominated for the prize.
Together the images address the most urgent environmental and social problems facing the planet today, from the aftermath of the war in Ukraine to human trafficking across the Gulf of Aden to childrens education in post-industrial England. Featured photographers include Mandy Barker, Joana Choumali, Gohar Dashti, Rena Effendi, Rinko Kawauchi, An-my Lê, Alice Mann, Chloe Dewe Mathews, Diana Markosian, Alex Prager, Taryn Simon and Vanessa Winship amongst others.
For her recent series, Azerbaijani photographer Rena Effendi visited several villages in Ukraine as residents began to return to the ruins of their homes; British photographer Polly Bradens series Holding the Baby portrays the impact of government austerity on single parents in England; Armenian-American photographer Diana Markosians series Santa Barbara explores wthe profound sacrifice made by her mother when she fled Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union; South African photographer Alice Manns series Drummies captures the unique aspirational subculture surrounding the young all-female teams of drum majorettes in South Africa; American photographer Alex Pragers recent work Afternoon portrays the instability, chaos and turmoil of modern America; and new work by Joana Choumali, the first African photographer to win the Prix Pictet, is from her ongoing series in which she photographs her surroundings at dawn before layering the images with embroidery.
Collage features introductory essays by notable figures in photography, including Sally Mann, winner of the ninth Prix Pictet in 2021. In an opening conversation between Michael Benson, Director of the Prix Pictet, and renowned Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide, she comments the photographers job is to synthesize, to make strong and poetic work from daily life. Each of the photographers featured in Collage does exactly that.
