Tate Acquires New Works at Frieze

LONDON, ENGLAND.-Several works have been acquired for the Tate Collection thanks to the £150,000 Frieze Art Fair Special Acquisitions Fund. A panel of expert curators selected the works: Jan Debbaut, Director, Tate Collection, Paul Schimmel, Chief Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Suzanne Pagé, Director, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris. The works will remain on display for the duration of the fair and will then be presented to the Tate Trustees in November.

In 2003, Frieze and Tate collaborated to establish the first acquisitions fund connected to an art fair. The Outset Contemporary Art Fund brought together a group of London collectors who contributed £100,000, which enabled Tate to acquire major works at the fair by four significant international artists - Fikret Atay, Olafur Eliasson, Anri Sala and Yutaka Sone.

In 2004 the fund increased to £150,000. Three internationally renowned curators chose thirteen works which were donated to Tate’s Collection. Works were acquired by: Pawel Althamer, Martin Boyce, Jeremy Deller & Alan Kane, Jesper Just, Mark Leckey, Scott Myles, Frank Nitsche, Henrik Olesen, Roman Ondák, The Atlas Group /Walid Raad, and Pae White.

The third annual Frieze Fair Special Acquisitions Fund was launched in May 2005 with a total of £150,000.

The Outset Contemporary Art Fund is organised by London collectors and Tate patrons Candida Gertler and Yana Peel. The donors all have a particular interest in supporting the Tate's acquisition of international contemporary art.

Nicholas Serota, Tate Director, said: "Tate’s budget for acquisitions is extremely limited and collecting contemporary art is essential to building Tate’s Collection for the future. We are delighted with these new acquisitions and I am very grateful to Candida Gertler, Yana Peel and the other donors for their continued enthusiasm and commitment, and to Frieze for facilitating the Fund.”
