Alex Marshall, Senior Specialist, Post-War and Contemporary Art, Christies, comments, Desert X has served as a great platform for international artists to experiment in creating outdoor artworks in a unique environment. I have always admired Neville Wakefield as a curator whose vision champions new and diverse artists and who continually conceives projects in unconventional platforms. With this exhibition, we are honored to work with Neville and bring attention both to this group of California-based artists and to the important role Desert X has played as a contributor to the artistic community in Southern California and internationally.
Sonya Roth, Deputy Chairman, Christies, comments, Christies Los Angeles is thrilled to collaborate with Desert X in this exciting exhibition. Over the past several years, Desert X has created fantastic immersive experiences that both activate and amplify the natural beauty of Southern Californias Coachella Valley. Bringing Desert Xs inspiring program into our Beverly Hills gallery is truly an honor and we could not be more excited to share this exhibition with our community and visitors alike during Frieze Week.
Neville Wakefield, Desert X Artistic Director, comments, Since its founding in 2017 in the Coachella Valley, Desert X has presented the work of more than 50 artists from around the world. I could not be more grateful to all those artists who have made Desert X possible and particularly those based here in California whose contributions have created the foundations upon which important and global dialogue around the capacity of art to engage new audiences and change hearts and minds has been built.
The fourth edition of Desert X in California will open March 4May 7, 2023 at sites across the Coachella Valley. It is curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and Co-curator Diana Campbell, featuring artists from Europe, North America and South Asia, who will create poetic and immersive works that span sculpture, painting, writing, architecture, film, sound performance and choreography, education and environmental activism. The exhibition will examine social and environmental themes explored in earlier editions with a focus on the changes that give form to a world increasingly shaped by climate crisis, globalism and the political and economic migrations that follow in its wake.
